Border Nights

Description

404km cycling event starting from Brampton. Controls at Eskdalemuir Community Hub, Galashiels, Lockerbie Lorry Park, Abington Services and Newtown., plus 5 information controls.

This is event will involve some long sections of night riding in very remote areas. Normally it's dark from Galashiels onwards until at least the overnight control for most riders.

There's been a few changes from when this was first planned when Covid was a still major issue so here's the new plan.
There's a lot more support available but it's still an overnight event.
We have the use of Lockerbie Lorry Park (LLP) overnight, food will be available. There will be an option to get a bit of sleep on floorspace in the bar area or there will be private rooms available (extra charge - more info on entry).
We will be using Newtown Village Hall for the finish and you'll get something to eat - I haven't worked out what yet.
There will be a bag drop from the start Lockerbie then to the finish.
Eskdalemuir Community Hub and Café (72km) will be staying open late for you and food will be available.
There's commercial facilities in Galashiels 131km before the 'overnight' control at LLP at 229km
After that there will be things open along the route by the time you get there.
The event will involve some long sections of night riding in very remote areas, from Galashiels onwards, it is intended for experienced Randonneurs or similar and will involve some long sections of night riding in very remote areas, from Galashiels onwards.
The vast majority of the roads are very quiet, you will see very little traffic during the day, let alone at night and it can get very dark. 24 hour facilities at two services stations and motel options for accommodation in addition to LLP.
Highlights are Eskdalemuir and Ettrick valley in early evening with probably almost no traffic. Peebles to Moffat in the dark (really dark) including Devils Beeftub and if the sky is clear a real dark sky experience. If you time it right the descent from Elvanfoot to Carronbridge down the Dalveen Pass can be a fantastic early morning experience.
An amended route between Thornhill and Dumfries which will make it a bit flatter and probably a equally scenic.
Be aware that although it's not a particularly hilly route, it is physically and mentally challenging.
(You can bring a sleeping bag/floor mat in your drop bag if you want a more comfortable nights sleep)
