50:50@50 event FAQs

Do I need to be a member of Audax UK to join these rides?
No, you will just need to register as a non-member on the website

How long is “long-distance”?
Probably not as long as you think! “Brevet Populaire” rides start at 50km (31miles) and the 50:50 rides are mostly 50km (31miles), 100km (62miles) or 150km (93miles).
Do note however, that many audaxes run “over distance” so do check the actual event distance on the entry page, email or .gpx.

Do I need to be a fast cyclist?
Absolutely not! Audax is not a race, and many riders will take their time and enjoy the ride. The minimum speed on Brevet Populaire events is 10-12.5km/hr (6.2-7.8mph) as the total time including stops. There is actually a maximum speed too of 20-25km/hr (12.4-15.5mph)!

What sort of bike do I need?
Most events will be on roads or cycle paths, and any road worthy bike will be suitable. If there is a prolonged off-road section or a section likely to cause certain bicycles an issue organiser will make you aware of this. The best bike to ride is the one you are most comfortable on and used to and Audaxers chose a range of machines from carbon road bikes, to steel classics.

Can I ride with a friend?
Yes! You can ride as part of a group, or with another individual but they must be on the ride too (it is pretty discourteous for cyclists not on the ride to turn up without paying entry). In fact, if you are new to audax we would recommend you buddy up with someone and either the event organiser or your regional women’s AUK representative can help you find someone if you need.

What do I need to take?
Whatever you might need for a solid day on the bike! A waterproof is a must, regardless of the forecast, and maybe an extra layer too. At least a puncture repair kit, spare tubes and pump; but as much tooling as you are confident using is beneficial. Emergency snacks are essential! All rides will have “Controls” with a range of facilities; some will put on food for you, some will be cafes where you can purchase food, and a couple will have the option of a “pavement picnic” outside a shop.
Remember to take plenty of water, top up frequently and make sure you drink it!
Don’t forget your lights/ HiVis if there is any risk you might be out near dusk.

What can I expect at the start/finish?
Many rides will be based an indoor start point like a village hall, pub or leisure centre. All will have toilets, and some will provide drinks and a bit of food to get you going- check the event
details. Most rides will finish at the same point and may provide you with food and drinks then too - some organisers take pride in their catering and curries, Jamaican patties and home baked Welsh cakes have all been on offer at various rides!

What about on the road? What if I need the loo?
The control points will be your main point of call on the ride and the distance to these will be provided on the entry page and your brevet card. They can get busy at peak times though and you can choose to stop anywhere on route. Many of us have become accustomed to the occasional “wild wee” but organisers may well have information about public conveniences on route, and most pubs and cafes will be happy to help you out if you make a small purchase.

Is the route marked?
No, routes are not marked but organisers will provide you with a .gpx file if you use a cycle computer. Otherwise, some rides still provide paper route sheets with directions or you can use the.gpx file on an app on your phone like Ride With GPS or Komoot- do take care not to run out of battery if you do this! Setting your phone to aeroplane mode is a good tip.

What happens if I can’t finish the ride? Or breakdown?
There is no recovery service we’re afraid so you will need to find your own way back! You should let the organiser know if you plan not to continue and they may be able to provide help in terms of finding public transport or a local bike shop as they are usually local. All of us will have had a “DNF” (did not finish) ride at some point and it just shows you have either been unlucky or pushed your limits!

There is a different distance ride I would prefer on the same day as a 50:50 ride, can I ride this instead?
Definitely. We have selected specific rides to target as part of the 50:50@50 idea, but you will be more than welcome on any Audax that takes your fancy!
