Tour of the Borders and Galloway

Description

606km cycling event starting from Carlisle. Controls at Carsphairn, Kirkmichael, Newton Stewart, Abington Services, Gretna Green Services, Moffat, Peebles and Kingstown, Carlisle., plus 3 information controls.

New start in Kingstown, Carlisle. Provisionally planned as a Roadside start and postal finish with an amended route with a loop around Galloway followed by a loop through the Borders.

Event reopened for entries following review 30/5/21.
It will be an X-rated event with no overnight event sleeping facilities provided. Riders will be expected to plan for their own sleeping arrangements as required. The overnight section for most will be between 295 and 408km has 24 hour facilities at Abington Services 295km, Johnstonebridge 337 and 408km as well as Gretna Green Services at 373km (Lockerbie Lorry Park is currently closed at the relevant times on weekends).
The route is on mainly very quiet roads. It's not a flat route but most of the climbing is gently graded and other than the overnight section is very scenic.
With some sensible planning there will be plenty of opportunities to get food at shops and cafes on the route but faster riders should be prepared to ride some long distances up to 100km potentially with very little option for commercial facilities. The route has been planned so that most riders will have a number of choices for places to eat and drink. Those who are quicker and don't stop much need to be aware that there is effectively nothing open in the Borders after Johnstonebridge on the later stages of the ride until the Sunday morning.
If you are intending to ride and are looking for accommodation at a commercial facility then you may want to consider booking this (on a fully flexible basis so it can be cancelled) before entering.
Entries for this event are limited and may close before the closing date. If you intend to enter and ride this event then early entry is encouraged to secure a place. For entry updates see Facebook Page 'Tyneside Vagabonds Audax Events'.
