Description

New for 2025 this route takes in several breath-taking long climbs to collect 3.5 late winter AAA points. You take on the steep side of the Gospel Pass, The Tumble and finally The Darkside of Wentwood!
The advisory route heads out of Chepstow up the Wye Valley past Tintern Abbey and on to Monmouth. The first real climb is past Rockfield and on to Newcastle. Next up is the steep climb into Grosmont before heading to the first Controls, Hopes Shop at Longtown. Then its a long steady climb over to Hay-on-Wye and then through Clyro to climb to Paincastle. The second controls is Erwood Station next to the Wye, top up with food and drink as the Gospel Pass awaits following Sustran route 42 which can be very exposed this time of year with strong winds, rain or even snow! The descent from the Gospel Pass is long down to Abergavenny where the third chance to refuel is a free controls before the ascent of the mighty Tumble. After that its relatively flat and fast to Usk and we follow the Usk River before the final big climb of the day, The Darkside of Wentwood. Its a long and fast descent to the final Info at Caerwent before following the A48 back into Chepstow for an Arrivee and a pint at The Three Tuns Inn. Pack a plenty of layers as you will ascend over 500m twice.
There are 3.5 AAA points on offer with three cafΘ controls and five information controls. There will be a breakfast roll, tea, coffee and toilets available at our start HQ.
