Description

Do you fancy having lunch in the only community owned castle in the UK? This pretty route has it all.
Through the Cheshire and Shropshire lanes to Prees for an easy info control. Then on to the wonderful well preserved 13th century Whittington Castle with it's wonderful cafe (if the cafe is busy there is a nearby shop and pub in the village and another great cafe in the grounds of Derwen College 2km further up the road). From there a brief 15km hop over the border into Wales and through Overton (where it is a 1 minute diversion to visit the Overton Yew Trees in the grounds of St Marys, some fascinating trees the oldest being over 1,500 years old and one of the Seven Wonders of Wales). Some quiet lanes get you to the historic market town of Malpas for the final option for a refuel before the last leg back to the headquarters where free refreshments await.
