Description

A truly epic event. Out to Chester, Mold, Colwyn Bay and to Llandudno for a ride around the Great Orme. From here it is down the sparsely populated Llyn Peninsula all the way to Aberdaron before turning to head home. The return journey contains the bulk of the event's climbing taking you some rarely visited parts of Wales. The journey from Ffestiniog to Ysbyty Ifan and onto Cyffiliog is the highlight of the ride and you will definitely be travelling slowly to pass through this remote area to take in the views (assuming the weather is obliging of course). From Cyffiliog, a welcome downhill to the historic market town of Ruthin to refuel. From Ruthin there is about 60km to home that still has a few bits of climbing to get over, but by now, its more downhill than up. The route has a significant amount of climbing, approx. 5,000m and 5 AAA points, most of the elevation is in the second half.
Note 1: Sections of the route, especially the Llyn Peninsula are very sparsely populated. The route passes 24 hour services at Mold (59km), Llandudno (119km), Bangor (159km) and Deinolen (166km). The calendar event has a 21:00 start so that the shops from Pwllheli onwards should be open for most riders, it is really important that you plan where you intend to stop to refuel and check that they are likely to be open when you pass and carry sufficient provisions to get you between your planned stops, I also recommend checking the aforementioned services are still operating a 24 hour service when you intend to ride.
Note 2: There are train tracks that cross the road at Porthmadog (275km) that you should be aware of.
Note 3: There is always the risk of rockfall around the Great Orme, if you would rather not ride around the headland then take an alternative route between North Parade (near Llandudno Pier) and rejoin the route where Abbey Road meets West Parade on West Shore.
