The Four Minute Mile

Description

210km cycling event starting from Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Controls at Woburn, Oxford, Great Missenden and Lytton Arms, Old Knebworth., plus 3 information controls.

You can use E-Brevet proof of passage on this event.

An anti clockwise outing to the Iffley stadium, Oxford where the Four Minute Mile was broken 70 years ago in 1954 by Roger Bannister. Double crossing of Chilterns, rolling scenic ridgeline through Vale of Aylesbury.

An x-rated outing with car park (free) start and pub finish. There may be a cafe start (with toilets) if enough entries in advance. Easy access by train from Cambridge or London or anywhere on East Coast mainline.

An anti clockwise outing to the Iffley stadium, Oxford where Roger Bannister first broke The Four Minute Mile on 6th May 1954. This year is the 70th anniversary of that iconic moment.

See the finishing post and bell fron that iconic race, and have the opportunity to walk round the track if no athletic events are on, and you ask nicely. Be inspired.

A tweaked route after Woburn to Oxford for this edition, still lovely rural lanes. Return via a greenway and the Chilterns. The Bluebells should be in their finery, at this time of year. Some steep hills but nothing too long or taxing or gratuitous. Finish at the Lytton Arms pub in Old Knebworth. Good selection of real ales and hot food. May be busy depends what time you finish.

Note that the finish is about 6km from the start. If you come by train then the station is about 5km from both the start and finish. Free parking at start or free parking about 3km away if you just want some downhill back to your car, once you've finished.
