Border Nights

Description

409km cycling event starting from Brampton. Controls at Eskdalemuir Community Hub, Galashiels, Johnstonebridge, Abington Services and Newtown., plus 5 information controls.

This event has an afternoon start and will involve at least several hours of night riding in very remote areas.

3pm Start with a ride up to Eskdalemuir for dinner, then it's over to the Ettrick Valley and down to Galashiels. It'll probably be starting to get dark around this time for most riders. You'll probably ride from Galashiels through Peebles and over the Devils Beeftub in the dark before a control in Johnstonebridge.
There'll be food at the community centre in Johnstonebridge and floorspace so you can have a nap if you want. You can have a small drop bag to be taken to Johnstonebridge.
Next stop is Abington Services (24hr) then back down to Dumfries and in theory, subject to the weather and everything else, a reasonably gentle finish.
The vast majority of the roads are very quiet, you will see very little traffic during the day, let alone at night and it can get very very dark.
Highlights are Eskdalemuir and Ettrick valley in early evening with probably almost no traffic. Current plan is to use Eskdalemuir as a control with food available on Saturday evening. Peebles to Moffat in the dark (really dark) including Devils Beeftub and if the sky is clear a real dark sky experience. If you time it right the descent from Elvanfoot to Carronbridge down the Dalveen Pass at dawn is stunning.
Finish currently planned for Village Hall just outside Brampton
Be aware that although it's not a particularly hilly route, but it can still be physically and mentally challenging.
