Les Ballons des Vosges

163km permanent cycling event starting from Champagney, 70290, France.

A scenic ride which shows off the very best of the climbing and the views in this beautiful part of eastern France. There are several gruelling and extended climbs over several mountains used in the Tour de France, including Le Grand Ballon, Le Ballon de Servance and La Planche des Belles Filles.

3500m+ of climbing over 163km.

The ride is designed to be started from the town of Champagney (70290, Haute-Saune) where you will find boulangeries, a supermarket and an ATM. There is also a bar and a campsite just outside of the town. It is possible to start from the summit of the Grand Ballon or Giromangy as well.

I would strongly recommend that this route is ridden in the summer months. There are several ski stations on the route which should give you a clue as to its nature! The Grand Ballon will be covered in snow and impassable from October to April.

As this is a “Permanent on Foreign Soil”, you will not be covered by AUK’s insurance for this event (even if you are an AUK member). With this in mind, it will be your responsibility to arrange suitable cover for the duration of your ride.

NON-MEMBERS are welcome but need to register first. This is free - we ask you to do this so we can verify your contact details. You only need to register once and can then enter multiple events or in future convert to paid membership.

PARENTAL CONSENT is required for entrants under 18 years of age. This can be declared by the parent/guardian making an online entry on behalf of the under 18 rider. Otherwise, although an entry can be made online, the parent/guardian should complete and sign the parental consent form available here.
