Velos' Indian summer secret
A challenging ride in the Towy and Teifi valleys interspersed with wild spectacular deserted Cambrian mountain, seaside fish and chips, experienced audax controls and lots of rolling climbing on quiet roads
A classic Welsh audax taking advantage of the fine weather that often persists into autumn in the far West. The route takes in quiet rural Carmarthenshire roads to Carmarthen before meandering up the Towy to Llandovery. From here the road goes upwards through the deserted Cambrian mountains eventually to Tregaron, thence on the Brevet Cymru route to New Quay. Some hard ups and downs lead back to the Teifi and back to the start. This challenging mountainous 200 should see in autumn in style. Numerous accommodation options are available for those wishing to stay longer in Welsh cycling nirvana. There are decent rail connections with Whitland, Clunderwen and Narberth stations all nearby, as well as Irish ferry ports in Fishguard and Pembroke Dock, giving easy access from the East or West.
