Description

An explore of rural heartlands central belt passing many industrial heritage sites along mostly quiet well surfaced lanes. Starting in Bathgate steel yard access to local amenities.
Route passes by old paraffin shale bings, tin mines, coal mines and peat workings. Heading south initially to Tinto Hill, then west to Muirkirk, a hive of historical mining, before coming back over the moor to cross the clyde valley and up to TV masts at Blackhill, and more mining! Before heading across the old peat bogs to Cumbernauld and eventually to the prison castle of Blackness on the forth coast, passing by Linlithgow palace, and a final push through the Bathgate alps!
Finish Bathgate high church hall with some hot food and tea/coffee/drinks. Plenty parking available, and half hourly trains from Edinburgh and Glasgow west.
