Description
A 200km ride around Northamptonshire, starting in the market town of Oundle, controls in Daventry and Olney and 4 information controls.
This is a ride around the edges of Northamptonshire, with forays into Rutland, Leicestershire, Bucks, Beds and Cambs. So 6 counties in all, 7 if you count Huntingtonshire there is a welcome to Huntingtonshire sign. It heads north from Oundle and turns west just before it finds the more severe hills. Onwards to Market Harborough after which we find our first hill of note at East Farndon. From there we progress over the fields where the Fairfax and Cromwell beat Charles and Rupert in the Battle of Naseby. Then through Northamptonshires highest village of Cold Ashby and down to Daventry.
The middle section from Daventry to Olney starts off with 4 short sharp hills but then settles down to nice undulating countryside passing through Sulgrave which is was the ancestral home of the family of George Washington. Through Salcey Forest and into the pretty village of Weston Underwood to pass between the 2 knobs and onto the Olney road.
The final third continues the mild rolling hills terrain, passing Kimbolton Castle, now home to a school but was where Catherine of Aragon lived after her divorce. Just after Brington is the RAF Molesworth Peace Garden not easy to see as its now a bit overgrown as this facility did house cruise missiles, or possibly simply a deception operation...
Whats not to like
Also free parking at the start and a pub finish!
