Description
New for 2027: an X-rated BRM calendar version of my Eleanor Cross Stamford perm, starting from Cambridge central railway station.
Quiet roads to St Neots, then faster roads to Kimbolton. All the climbing is between Oundle and Wing, and will be familiar to anyone who has ridden Nick Wilkinsons Pork Pie. Stamford makes for a good lunch stop, with numerous cafes and a Wetherspoons. We touch through Peterborough - maybe see a steam train on the Nene Valley Railway. Then a more direct route out of Peterborough than the permanent version - past Norman Cross the memorial is well worth a look and down the old Great North Road. From St Ives, were down the A1307 old A14 path rather than the busway in case the busway is under water. Finish at Cambridge central railway station, where there are several food trucks open all afternoon and evening.
Hills and Holes is the name of a delightful nature reserve in Barnack, a village we pass through just after Stamford. Described by Dr Oliver Rackham as a magnificently durable stone, Barnack limestone was first quarried here by the Romans and was used in the building of Peterborough and Ely cathedrals, lush buildings in Stamford including Burghley House, many Cambridge colleges, widely throughout Fenland including Crowland bridge, Bury St Edmunds and odd places in London such as within the Tower of London and Roman remains of London Wall. I love cycling by and stopping for a sandwich - it always strikes me as a terrific-looking place to play hide and seek.
Easy access to Cambridge central from London Kings Cross, London Liverpool Street and Ely. Parking at Trumpington Park and Ride just off the M11 £10 charge for stays longer than 18 hours. Sadly the only toilet facilities at the start are on the train station platform, but youll be able to leave your bike with me and staff dont mind letting you through the barriers for the loo. Let me know if you are ECEing and will need water at the start, and Ill bring some for you. Youll be able to grab a coffee and a Greggs at the start.
E-brevet available, but brevet cards for everyone in order to get that precious ACP number for PBP.
