Riders’ Code of Conduct Refresh

Audax UK has updated the guidance it gives to entrants in response to requests from organisers and members. Our updated code of conduct reflects the changing world whilst reaffirming our core ethos.

AUK has long provided a simple bullet point list of "Dos and Don’ts" to help everyone get the best from long distance cycling events. However, it hasn’t changed much in recent years and was due a refresh. Most of its elements will seem common sense to regular cyclists such as respecting the rules of the road, being environmentally responsible and following organisers’ instructions. However, it also emphasises the importance of the audax spirit of self sufficiency, support and community.

As well as celebrating the willingness of riders to stop and help fellow cyclists in trouble, the code encourages consideration (for example by eschewing flashing lights) and respect.

The full code can be read here and many organisers will include the text in the notes which they send entrants before their events. Audax UK has grown a lot in the last decade and we can’t assume that everyone signing up for a ride understands what makes Audaxing work. The refresh was an opportunity to underline what makes our particular community work – people like the challenges our organisers offer because of the unique spirit and camaraderie that gets us all to the finish line.

The code is a set of guidelines rather than hard and fast rules although AUK’s regulations do allow for penalties in extreme situations where someone has failed to live up to the standards of the rest of the membership.

Riders with any questions about the new code of conduct are always welcome to discuss them with event organisers or board members.
