Description

The National 400 returns to northern England to celebrate Audax UK's 50th anniversary. Click "link to organiser's website" to view the route.

Based upon the popular Summertime Blues from Yorkshire Cycle Festival at Driffield Showground (formerly York Cycle Rally), it's about as easy a ride as you can get up and down and through the Pennines, with village hall controls along the route. Ideal for a first-time go at a 400, as you only need to fetch a pencil for a few infos, a few snacks to see you between village halls, and a bit of cash to get a receipt at Barton Truck Stop World Heritage Site (it remains a garage forecourt control, as a nod to all the great rides which passed there, including the first editions of LEL).

Controls are at: Whixley Village Hall (91 km), Gayle Institute (just outside Hawes at the foot of Fleet Moss - 172 km), Mickleton Village Hall (230 km) and Northallerton (305 km). Northallerton also has an optional but highly-recommended bag drop, as it features a shower and space to sleep - if you fetch your own sleeping bag, pillow and cuddly toy. Likely to be limits on bag sizes, but a small bag can take all of that plus a change of kit.

A well-supported event with lots of camping and food available at Driffield, as the cycle festival is the start and finish and heart and soul of the event. Camping and food at the start and finish aren't included in the entry fee, all the support is on the route.
