Description

A challenging route crossing Bowland twice and with a visit to the seaside. Starting from Whalley, leave the A59 at Sawley Bridge to cross the Forest of Bowland via Gisburn Forest to White Scar Caves. From there on to Hawes before turning for Sedbergh along the most northerly section of the route and aim for the coast to visit the beach at Arnside and Silverdale. Inland then to cross the Forest of Bowland once again, this time via the Cross of Greet, Slaidburn and Cow Ark to Longridge. Turn for Colne via Whalley (not the finish just yet though!) followed by a crossing of Widdop Moor to Mytholmroyd via Hebden Bridge. Now the longest continuous road ascent in England along Cragg Vale, at almost 9k long but with an average gradient of just 3% to Blackstone Edge, this should leave enough in the tank to get back to Whalley. The remaining few km has a steeper but shorter climb to Sharnyford, followed by the very last climb from Bacup over to Padiham and back to Whalley.

There are lots of places to eat/drink along the route: Ingleton (near White Scar Caves), Hawes, Sedbergh, Arnside, Silverdale, Carnforth, Horny, Wray, Slaidburn tearoom (before 4pm), Longridge, Whalley, Colne, Hebden Bridge, Mytholmroyd, Bacup and Padiham. The route can be ridden in either direction and start can be from any control or anywhere along the route using GPS or E-Brevet. Please be aware though riders are strongly advised the A59 from Whalley passing Clitheroe is best done when traffic is at its lightest, as the 10km section here can potentially be very busy. After this bit the route is much quieter, hillier, remote and exposed at times. Please make sure your bicycle is well maintained and you carry appropriate spares, clothing and lights. After entry I will email an editable routesheet and RWGPS link. Sew on event cloth badges are available to purchase too for just £2.50 inc P&P. Email me if interested.
