This event has a mandatory route - you must use a GPS track for proof of passage

Description

This perm is based on Bill Carnaby's calendar event which last ran in 2022. Arguably the "centre" of London has been shifting East for some time, and I am an East Londoner so this version includes some new paths and sights to reflect that, whilst retaining most of Bill's West London route.

An opportunity to explore London by bike - this route traverses the capital from East to West showcasing the transition of the Thames from open Estuary to a cosy river above the tidal limit. It passes many of the classic sights, plus some newer and lesser known ones, with a foray to the Olympic Park and a free ferry crossing, using many traffic free routes plus some of London's relatively new dedicated cycle infrastructure. At least 80% of the route is motor traffic free or traffic calmed - but you still need to be willing and confident to tackle a few busier roads and junctions as the sightseeing has to be balanced with the need to cover the distance.

You are never far from opportunities to eat or drink (some of my favourites will be indicated in the extensive route notes).

You can go in either direction - the route is mostly the same with minor changes to accommodate one way systems but the views are different, so try it both ways. This ride doesn't lend itself to traditional controls and minimum distance, so it is set as mandatory route with GPS proof of passage only and you can start wherever you like. Minor deviations from the mandatory route to take in more sights (and which make the route longer) are acceptable and some suggested diversions are included in the route notes.
The route is close to most mainline railway stations - particularly Waterloo, Paddington, Fenchurch Street, Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Victoria and also Stratford (International and domestic).

There are some time restrictions related to parks and the ferry which close at night - full details in the route notes. The minimum and maximum speed are very low - some sections are slow (and may require walking short distances) but others allow you to move along a bit faster. Traffic lights are there to be observed and there are a lot of them. Mowing down pedestrians and other road users is considered bad form and should be avoided whoever is in the right! Take your time and your photos and enjoy....
